Hints for the HTC Desire (2010-07-18)
Category: Useful Information. Posted: 2010-07-18 23:33:13 BST.
The HTC Desire is my first Android phone, and I'm very impressed with it. I found a few things confusing first of all. Some of these are fairly obvious, but I thought I'd list them in case:
- The green numbers in the people list show that there are events associated with that person.
- Pressing and holding the Home button brings up a small window with the 6 most recently opened programs.
- Pressing the Home button brings up the "helicopter view".
- If you don't link your phone to a Google account as soon as you get it, you will have problems linking it later. I found using 3G instead of wi-fi let me link it.
- I deleted the default clock/weather widget by mistake. It took me a while to find it to add it again, but it's a clock widget, not a weather widget.
- Install a bar code reader to scan QT codes on websites.
- Update the firmware to improve battery life.
- I'd forgotten about the tracker on the phone, but realised it's very useful to position the cursor in the middle of text.
- Putting the phone into Aircraft Mode locks the SIM card, so that the PIN is needed to use it.
- Pressing and holding the screen brings up a short-cut menu in many applications.
- If Google Sky doesn't move automatically, make sure you haven't switched it to "manual" by mistake.
- When you've installed new apps, lots of icons appear at the top of the screen. To view the notification icons simply drag the top of the screen down. They can be cleared by clicking on "Clear".
- If you've locked your SIM card, the PUK unlock code is entered by pressing **05*<PUK>*<PIN>*<PIN>#. I haven't actually used this, but I wanted to know how to do it before I put a PIN on the SIM card.
Most of these comments probably apply to other Android phones, but I don't know how many.
Please feel free to post comments about my blog here, but please keep to these rules:
- Write in English, preferably with good grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
