It had rained all night, but wasn't raining in the morning. Despite this, I decided to get a taxi because I was bound to get splashed by lots of cars if I walked. This gave me lots of relaxing time before I left the hotel. The course went OK, and I got a lift to the station. I caught the first train to Lancaster. I arrived at Lancaster at about half-five, and had two choices:
17:48 - leave from Lancaster.
18:56 - arrive at Manchester Piccadilly.
19:11 - leave Manchester Piccadilly.
20:00 - arrive at Leeds.
20:26 - leave from Leeds.
20:37 - arrive in Shipley.
19:04 - leave from Lancaster.
20:59 - arrive at Shipley.
The first option had more opportunity to go wrong, but does use nicer trains, does arrive earlier, and does mean I don't wait for two hours at Lancaster. I didn't feel like wondering around Lancaster town, so went with the first option. The woman sitting in front of me on the train to Lancaster said she reckoned the first option made more sense (she used to live in Shipley) and the ticket bloke on the train assured me that my ticket was valid on either route. While waiting for my train at Lancaster station, I noticed that I could have made a cycle reservation by phone with Virgin Trains up to ten minutes before departure. I'll be ranting about that to FGW, don't you worry! [2010/01/22 18:34 - I'm on the train from Lancaster to Manchester Piccadilly, and will let you know whether I arrive on time......]
[2010/01/22 19:22] Just left Manchester Piccadilly 11 minutes late. If the train was on time, I would have 17 minutes between trains at Leeds station. Will I make my connection?
[2010/01/24 14:59 - update] The train to Leeds made up time during the journey, so only arrived 2 minutes late. I had a reasonably enjoyable journey because the other 3 people sitting at the same table I was sitting at were quite chatty. TomTom navigated me to Fiona's place OK, but it navigated me to the entrance to the underground car park. I realised this before I walked too far, and called Fiona for directions. Fiona and Izzy have moved to a very nice estate and have veryhave a very nice flat. Fiona had bought some Stella and Stella 4 for me, so I was happy. We got an Indian take-away delivered, and had a really nice evening.
