Yesterday, Sarah had booked us tickets to see Woman in Black, and said to meet her at half-six at Covent Garden. My TomTom still didn't turn on when not being charged, so I had to use the TFL Journey Planner to plan my route from Paddington to Covent Garden.
The train from Slough to Paddington was a long-distance one, so I got to put my bike in the guard's van. I couldn't get it into the rack, and, unlike the last time I used that type of guard's van, the guard wasn't up for helping me. I therefore leant it against the side of the train, and hoped for the best. On the train, I got a comfortable seat, but wasn't tired enough to kip. I started sorting out my digital pictures, looking through all the settings on my camera, and updating my blog. Some gimmer on the other side of the train used his mobile in the mobile-free carriage, but I couldn't be bothered to complain, since it was only a text message.
At Paddington, I called Rob about this weekend, but realised that I couldn't hear him with two inter-city trains either side of me! I therefore called him again once I'd got out of the station. The TFL directions were spot on, but I did arrive a few minute late - I would have arrived earlier, but Sarah kept me chatting on the phone when she called to find out how long I'd be!
She was looking as sexy as ever, and said that there were some bike racks on the other side of Covent Garden. It took us a while to weave our way past everybody, but we got to the other side eventually, and I spotted some bike racks. After we locked our bikes up, Sarah said that she knew a good place to eat, which was called Bistro 1. We walked along the road that she thought it was on, but couldn't find it. We walked back along the road, and found it almost immediately opposite where we'd locked our bikes up. The food was nice, and good value, and, since it didn't serve draught lager, I drank water. We ate fairly quickly, because we weren't sure exactly where the theatre is, and wanted to leave plenty of time. After taking a few wrong turnings, we got to the theatre. After excess gimmering with our tickets (we'd been upgraded to sit in the stalls), we went inside (there wasn't time for a sneaky pint). We left our bags with the totty selling food, and sat down.
Woman in Black is supposed to be the scariest stage play around. The first half wasn't very scary, but it certainly was a good play. With a 15-minute interval, we only just made it back in time for the second half. The second half was more scary than the first half, and had an unexpected twist at the end (well, I thought it was unexpected, Sarah had expected it all the way through!). We went to the pub again after the play. After one pint, I didn't really want a second, but I didn't want to leave yet either. I'm going to have to learn to drink something other than Stella in a pub. We walked back to our bikes, and, as always, I took ages getting ready. I don't know why it takes me so long, it just does. We must have got funny looks from passers-by, as Sarah bent down to put on my trouser clips and reflective stripes for me ("while you're down there, love!").
There were lots of one-way streets on TFL's directions, so I didn't rate my chances of following them in reverse, so Sarah said she'd cycle with me as far as the road that runs between King's Cross and Paddington. She knew the way from Holborn, but wasn't sure how to get to Holborn. Fortunately, I knew the way to Holborn, so off we went. Once we got to Regent's Park, I cycled off to Paddington, and Sarah cycled home. Instead of following the road signs to Paddington, I decided to follow the cycle-route signs. These took what seemed like quite a long route, but did keep me off the main roads. I think I'll use TomTom once I've fixed him.
I had to wait about 20 minutes for a train, and I was busting for a jimmy. I didn't want to lock my bike up, so just hoped I'd manage to wait until I got home. There were a few gimmers smoking inside the station, but I kept my mouth shut, because they were far enough away that it didn't affect me. Cycling home from Slough, I had to stop for a jimmy on the way home. Back at home, I was knackered, so went straight to bed.
Thanks to Sarah for a top evening.
