For our mother's birthday, my brother and I had organised an evening out in London (well, my brother organised, and I paid half). When I got onto the tube at Paddington, I saw a printed poster saying that King's Cross was closed until further notice. That didn't seem like a good idea. On the way from Picadilly Circus to Soho, I saw a play called "Grumpy Old Women" advertised - it had been described as "More uplifting than a reinforced wonderbra!". I smiled and carried on walking. I wasn't really sure where I was going, so went to walk into a shop to ask for directions. I soon stopped, when I realised that it was a fetish shop!
We went to a vegetarian Chinese restaurant, and then onto the re-opening night of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. The club was really nice, the service was friendly, and the music was brilliant. The "headliner" was a jazz legend, but I'd never heard of him before. To add to my enjoyment, the waitresses were quite sexy, and the club was completely non-smoking. It started off with a trio, who were later joined by a famous saxophonist, and a fairly well-stacked Aussie singer. It turned out that she was half Aussie, and half Italian, so started whittering on about the Italy vs. Australia football match. After that, the headlining guvna came on (I still can't remember his name).
The only downside was that the service, despite being friendly, was terrible. It took about half-an-hour to order a round of drinks. About 15 minutes after we'd ordered our third round of drinks, the waitress came over to check that we'd got the drinks. My mother said that we hadn't, and that we'd just like the bill. 15 minutes after that, we still hadn't had the bill, and they still had my credit card. I went up to the bar on the way out, explained how long we'd been waiting, and said that if I didn't get my credit card back straight away, I would report it stolen. Suddenly, we started getting some service!
I arrived at Paddington at about 23:30. There was a train to Slough at 23:53, but the next train to Langley was at 00:24. I knew that I'd end up going into a smoky bar, and having a few pints, if I waited for the Langley train, so caught the Slough train. On the train on the way back, I tried to find out why King's Cross was closed, but neither TfL or the BBC could help. Anyway, I arrived in Slough, and walked home from there (making a total of 8.5 miles that I'd walked today). I got home before I would have got home if I'd caught the Langley train, but didn't feel tired enough to go to bed. I therefore made myself a cuppa, and settled down to check my e-mail, and surf the 'net. Next thing I knew, it was 02:30.
